For the Spirit to cultivate your soul in love
To practice the habit of hospitality
Today’s text: 3 John 1:1-16
SOME COMMENTATORS SAY that the essential sin of Israel was of two parts: they forgot God and went after other gods, and in their forgetting God they became unable to be hospitable.
Among all the charges that were laid against Jesus during his ministry, the most consistent was that he “ate with sinners,” meaning that he did not maintain the necessary boundaries around the table, but treated everyone as companions (cum panis, with bread).
A Celtic proverb highlights our need: just as the table without bread is a needy one, so the soul that has not charity toward a brother is in ruin, for the soul can only walk by love; the one who has not love abides in death.
