Prayer Pointers:

For strength to continue in your Lenten discipline

To be renewed in Spirit

Today’s text: Hebrews 3:12-19

A FAMOUS QUOTE from Thomas Merton is appropriate for our Lenten disciplines: “self-denial for the Christian is not about conquest of the self, but a dying to self in order to live with God in Christ.”

Our salvation is not found in our works—we are, as Hebrews says, a hard-hearted people. We can make our self-denial as much about ourselves as we can anything else in this world. Our ability to say “no” to ourselves means little apart from God’s “yes” to us. Our Lenten fast is of no account apart from the Easter feast.

Yet Lent is not simply or only a dour thing; we who journey through these Lenten lands have Christ as our companion, for he has come down to share with us the toil and bestow upon us the crown.

May your day be grace-filled ~ Pr. Dave Brooks
