For purity of heart
To be wise about brokenness in your life
For those who pursue idolatry
Today’s text: Titus 1:1-16
BLESSED ARE THE PURE IN HEART, for they will see God. Jesus teaches his disciples this and backs up this teaching with clear focus throughout his ministry on how it is from the heart, from the things a person loves, that comes what is Godly or not—or good and evil, we might say. Luther, following the Lord Jesus, insisted that both God and an idol arise from the trust and longing of the human heart. If faith/trust are given to something other than God, then it is not the true God that has you, but rather an idol.
This spiritual truth addresses modern life by being honest that there is no place in life that you or I can go that will be free of sin, corruption, evil, ungodliness, or what have you. Each of us carries the cracking effect of sin in our hearts, and the crack runs right down the center of each of us. Feed that crack, and nothing you or I might pursue, no matter how high and lofty, will end well. Idolatry and death are always the results. But there is also hope: pursuing the things of God leaves room for Godliness to grow within ourselves, among our families and friends, and in our world.
