Sunday, Week of Christ the King

Text: Matthew 21:1-13

Prayer Pointers:

For praise of Christ our King

For faith in his righteous judgement

THE FEAST OF CHRIST THE KING is new on the Church calendar, having appeared in the 1920s as a counterweight against the growing threat of European secularism and totalitarianism in Italy, Spain, Germany and Russia. As the last Sunday of the Church Year (a Sunday that the LCMS calendar labels “Sunday of the Fulfilment” or “Last Sunday after Pentecost,” although the appointed readings are essentially identical), Christ the King captures the intertwined themes of Jesus Christ as the Lord of glory, the Judge of all nations, and the longed-for Redeemer.

As we come close to the end of what has been a challenging year, we can be glad for Christ our King, whose mercies are ever new, whose love does not fail us, and whose power holds us in spite of all.

O Jesus Christ do not delay but hasten our salvation!

We often tremble on our way in fear and tribulation.

Oh, hear and grant our fervent plea; Come mighty Judge and set us free!

from death and every evil.

May your day be grace-filled ~ Pr. Dave Brooks
